57,000 Carat Emerald, Called “World’s Largest,” Up for Auction

What is being described as the “world’s largest cut emerald” is being auctioned in Canada by Kelowna-based Western Star Auctions on Jan. 25.

The 57,500 ct. oval stone weighs around 25 lbs. and is described as the “size of a watermelon.”

The stone, named Teodora (or "God's Gift"), has been valed at about $1.15 million, but we think it'll probably sell for a whole lot more.

Some details about this huge rock:

 - It was found in somewhere in Brazil and cut in India

- The stone has been treated, but it's still gorgeous. If it were translucent, it would be a billion-dollar stone.

- There have been bigger rough emeralds found in the past, but this is thought to be the largest cut and polished stone...ever.

What a goregous stone! A marquise shape this big, with amazing color and clarity is not something you often come by...

A 9.22 ct. D-IF marquise-cut diamond ring sold for $969,838 at Bonham’s Fine Jewelry Sale in London on Dec. 8.

Who can afford a $1M diamond? Well, it seems that in this economic climate, more people are looking for "tangible assets" such as gold and diamonds.
