Sumptuary laws are practiced in some cultures. The laws are made to enforce a kind of dress code. In fact, they lay out what females and males are required to wear. An example is the Islam culture that requires women to wear what they consider small attire, typically hijabs. Though small in the Muslim culture means women show very little epidermis and much less of their bodies than what men show. Most Muslim women wear headscarves and burqas.

Skirts and dresses are commonly seen as a clothing product for females, but they may also be worn by men. Kilts and togas are examples of skirts worn by men, usually during ceremonial occasions. However, in the past, men would wear these items more regularly and it was recognized.

Usually this does not include many of the frills that are seen in clothes for women. The majority of women's clothes are made to flatter and accentuate different parts of the body. While mens clothes are made with the intention to be functional, comfortable and practical. There are generally more female clothes to choose from than males, but there are stores that cater to mens attire completely, and in the fashion industry, there are many designers who focus on male clothes.

Covering designed for the male body is often called mens clothing, or menswear. Though it is designed with the male body in mind, it may also be worn by women. Historically, there were certain items of clothing reserved for specific genders, but in modern times, many of these restrictions have not held. It is more socially acceptable for a female to wear male coverings than for a male to wear female coverings.
